Neutralisation of stomach acid

Stomach acid is essential for digestion, but too much or too sour stomach acid can have a negative effect on the stomach wall of your horse. Maerl (calcified seaweed) is the main active ingredient of Pavo GastriCover, that not only buffers the stomach acid but also has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Buffering of stomach acid is desired as it can help to create a healthy pH value in the stomach, necessary for good digestion and a healthy stomach wall. Moreover, the major benefit of maerl is the long-lasting effect. Many other buffering ingredients have a short but strong effect. In contrast, Maerl has a long lasting and gradual effect, meaning that the stomach acid is buffered for a longer period of time and in steady amounts. Stomach acid can be harmful for the stomach but is also indispensable for digestion. However, too much buffering of stomach acid will decrease digestion in the end.
