Clicker training is a very animal-friendly and effective method of training that can be used with all animal species.
This Pawise Clicker is easy to hang on the wrist, pants or belt during training.

The training method
A clicker is a small box containing a metal plate. When you press it, you hear a metallic click. Clicker training is a training method that teaches the animal to associate its own behavior with an event in the environment.

In practice, this means that when the animal exhibits desired behavior, it is rewarded by its owner. The animal will want to exhibit the desired behavior more often because it gains something positive. Undesirable behavior yields nothing and is not punished.

This makes this training method very animal-friendly. To give an example of how this learning method works: if a dog knocks over a trash can once (natural behavior) and then finds food (a positive consequence), he will exhibit that behavior more often.

On the other hand, if he does this multiple times without any food being available (no reward for the behavior), this behavior will eventually disappear.

To learn
Clicker training is primarily used for teaching. Once the animal understands and performs the exercise correctly, clicking is gradually reduced. This method can be used not only to teach new commands but also to address unwanted behavior (such as pulling on the leash, lunging at other dogs, etc.).

Clicker training was originally used primarily with dolphins and wild animals. Today, it's a widely used method for training dogs as well. Some owners even use clickers to train cats, rabbits, birds, and more.

Advantages
The clicker always produces the same sound ('click'). This is a very clear signal for the dog, often clearer than a word or sound you make yourself. One of the most important advantages of using a clicker is that you can time it accurately to the second.

You can reward desired behavior with a click. Training methods that only use food as a reward, for example, are often given too late and unintentionally reward other behavior.

Click sound
Some dogs are initially a little hesitant or even afraid of the sound, but this can often be quickly remedied by muffling the sound (by holding the clicker behind their back) or by using a clicker that produces a softer sound.

It's often said that the clicker isn't suitable for classroom training because dogs will react to other owners' clickers. In that case, a clicker with different tones can be used. In practice, however, we see that this problem hardly ever occurs when training is done with attention.

Clicker training in practice
First, the dog must learn that a click is a predictor of a reward. This is taught by clicking and immediately giving the dog a training treat or food. Once the dog understands this, you can move on to teaching specific exercises.

Initially, the dog is clicked (and therefore fed) for each good "start" to perform the exercise. The dog can be encouraged to make this "start" using gestures. In some cases, the dog is simply waited for to spontaneously initiate the exercise.

For example, when teaching a dog to stand from a sitting position, initially click (and feed) for minimally lifting the hindquarters. After a few repetitions, the click is delayed a little longer to gradually increase the dog's demand for the desired exercise.

This process continues until the dog has mastered the exercise perfectly. Only then is a command linked to the exercise. When the entire exercise is performed correctly on command, the clicking is gradually phased out.

This way, the dog also starts thinking for itself and seeking out what's being asked of it. Owners who frequently use clicker training sometimes also give a short game as a reward instead of food.

In short, clicker training is not only very effective, but also a really fun way to train and engage with your four-legged friend!
